GIS and Augmented Reality to enhance Field Service and worker safety

When merged, GIS and virtual data allow to see spatial information in the real world. Details otherwise invisible such as networks, assets and related information can be viewed on map in AR, while the contents are dynamically represented relying on tracking and positioning capabilities. Moreover, the sharing of 3D models and other content through virtual collaboration capabilities enables a “see-what-I-see” interaction among users operating in different locations, thus allowing remote assistance or training.
Smartphones, tablets and smartglasses are key to making the most out of AR capabilities. Other wearables, such as smartwatches, can also be used to increase the accuracy of both the user’s position and the map representation. Integrating them becomes essential when monitoring field technicians’ safety: through the advanced sensors provided, the operators’ vital signs are measured in order to efficiently and promptly manage emergency situations.
The deployment of GIS and AR in mobile devices is clearly boosting Field Service, with proven benefits in terms of technician enablement, training on-the-job, increased quality of maintenance operations, time optimization, streamlined work debrief and improved worker safety.
