Perspectives as grid operators: Amendments to the Incentive System Regulations, Digitisation and the Expansion of Renewable Energy

In the past, the grid business has often been the reliable, supporting pillar for public utilities and other supply companies. The new regulatory framework conditions and reduced return on equity now threaten to undermine this.

The conference“Perspectives for Grid Operators: Amendments to the Incentive System Regulations, Digitisation and the Expansion of Renewable Energy”, will shed light on the short, medium and long-term challenges for distribution network operators from varied perspectives, and highlight potential solutions. The changes arise because:

  • refinancing is substantially altered for the investment to be made, as a result of balancing capital costs,
  • lower interest rates can worsen credit rating, and this can have repercussions on the whole company,
  • digitisation not only allows meters and networks to become more intelligent, but also puts many operational processes under scrutiny,
  • the infrastructure required in the long-term is changed by the 2050 Climate Protection plan.

Network operators will have to face up to these new challenges to make continued economic operation of the grid possible in the regulated world of network monopolies. In future, networks will, however, lose their attractiveness due to falling returns and increasing complexity. The event will highlight potential solutions for the upcoming changes in strategy, investment behaviour and in the organisation, to make network operators fit for the future so that they can continue to prosper even in stormy times.
