24th EnergieAgentur.NRW Expert Conference on Future Energies on 11/2/2020

Focus on smart cities with energy and mobility solutions

Essen. Smart cities and their approaches to innovative energy solutions, new forms of mobility and hydrogen applications are the TOPICS of the future. This will be evidenced by EnergieAgentur.NRW with the EnergieRegion.NRW and EnergieForschung.NRW clusters on Tuesday, 11 February 2020, at its 24th Expert Conference on Future Energies (9 am to 4 pm) at Messe Essen. Some 800 energy sector experts will discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by these at the opening event for the 20th E-world energy & water in a plenary session in the morning and three expert forums in the afternoon. The 24th Expert Conference on Future Energies will be opened at 10 am by Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, State Minister for Economic Affairs and Digitalisation for North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

Cities are key players in the implementation of the ‘Energiewende’ energy transition. There has never been a more visible need to ensure ever-growing cities develop along more sustainable lines. But how will cities remain liveable in the future? How can they contribute to protecting our climate? And how can they be made more sustainable? Digitalisation and thus smart city concepts may help us to answer these questions with, for example, more efficiently planned and managed buildings, demand-driven mobility concepts and efficient, renewable and decentralised energy supply systems.

Prof. Achim Kampker of RWTH Aachen will open the morning lecture series with the keynote “Imagining the city of tomorrow”. He will be followed by Prof. Dr. Hans J. Lietzmann from the University of Wuppertal with the topic “Acceptance and participation on the way to a smart city”. Well-known WDR presenter Tobias Häusler will moderate the morning session.

Expert Forum A in the afternoon is about “The importance of sustainable and flexible energy solutions for a smart city” and will be moderated by Prof. Manfred Fischedick of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. Among other things, six start-ups looking to revolutionise the urban energy system of the future will be presented.

Forum B will tackle the question: “Transition to sustainable forms of transport as a challenge for networks?”. The moderator will be Georg Grothues, an electromobility expert from EnergieAgentur.NRW. The lectures will look at the status and future of electromobility in NRW and its influence on the use of networks.

Forum C “Possible hydrogen applications for urban energy solutions” will be moderated by Dr. Thomas Kattenstein, Head of the Fuel Cell, Hydrogen and Electromobility Network of the EnergieAgentur.NRW. In addition to historical and current policy considerations with regard to hydrogen as an energy source, the forum will present innovative usages in the urban environments of three Western European cities.

EnergieAgentur.NRW is guest at Messe Essen for three days

After the Expert Conference, there will be an opportunity to visit the trade fair from 4 to 6 pm. EnergieAgentur.NRW will join with the EnergieRegion.NRW and EnergieForschung.NRW clusters at the joint stand of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digitalisation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hall 3, Stand 370). Around 20 companies and research institutions will also present their innovative technologies and services at the State’s joint stand.

North Rhine-Westphalia Evening from 6 pm on Tuesday, 11/2/2020

The North Rhine-Westphalia Evening with live music will provide an opportunity for everybody to wind down after the energy-driven first day of the trade fair from 6 pm on 11 February at the State stand in Hall 3.
