CAMPFIRE AG: The key role of green ammonia for the ramp-up of a hydrogen economy

The global energy transition is now well underway, and ammonia is undoubtedly the go-to carbon-free solution for the global hydrogen economy. Ammonia is essential for the global adoption of a truly carbon-free hydrogen economy and for energy security. Its favourable properties make it a reliable and economical workhorse that overcomes many of the technological hurdles that still exist for hydrogen. The use of ammonia as a future energy carrier requires innovative technologies. The CAMPFIRE alliance, with its 80+ partners in Germany and Europe, is at the forefront of this progress. They are developing cutting-edge technologies for the future green ammonia economy, ensuring a sustainable and innovative energy source. These products are designed for use in various sectors, including renewable energy production, plant construction, the chemical industry, shipbuilding, metal construction, fuel cell and combustion engine manufacturers, lightweight construction, measurement and control technology, and engineering services.

Jens Wartmann provides a comprehensive overview of CAMPFIRE’s key industrial technologies in his presentation at the Hydrogen Solutions Forum on February 13th as part of the ammonia slot between 10 – 10:30 am, paving the way for SMEs and their business partners to establish new sustainable business areas and product launches in the market ramp-up of ammonia and hydrogen. The presentation covers decentralised green ammonia production for storing wind and solar energy, ammonia crackers, combustion engines, turbines and fuel cells for direct ammonia use, e.g. in maritime propulsion and land-based applications, flexible refuelling stations for shipping, railways and heavy-duty machinery, and ammonia-powered plants. There is an urgent need for ammonia fuel regulations. Ammonia is highlighted as the main energy vector for our future carbon-free hydrogen economy. The supply industry must offer their customers decarbonised products in the future to maintain their marketability. Most of these companies will be located in the hinterland, far away from the hydrogen core grid, so they face a challenge that is difficult to overcome. The hydrogen core grid planned from 2032 will not be sufficient for the market ramp-up, so the development of new green ammonia supply chains is essential for decarbonisation. Ammonia logistics does not compete with grid-based hydrogen supply, but offers a complementary, comprehensive solution for the rapid development of a hydrogen economy in the hinterland, and the future grid-based supply will definitely benefit from this. Ammonia transport modes are scalable and flexible. They grow with demand and can be expanded quickly.

A successful market ramp-up absolutely requires ammonia as a complementary solution, a fact that the political debate has thus far overlooked. The CAMPFIRE partners will therefore close the existing gap with great urgency, solving this task by 2027 in line with the climate targets. A strong partnership between the stakeholders along the inland waterways is imperative for this, as it is the only way to quickly develop the necessary logistics capacities for ammonia. Jens Wartmann presents a complete supply route for imported ammonia from the European seaports to the hinterland using the Rhine as an example and derives recommendations for action for international cooperation and implementation.

CAMPFIRE projects for the development of green ammonia technologies are funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, and the EU's FET Proactive: emerging paradigms and communities as part of WIR! Wandel durch Innovation in der Region and the hydrogen flagship project TransHyDE.
