ENERGY ONE OFFERS INNOVATIVE AND FLEXIBLE SOLUTIONS TO SUPPORT BATTERY OPERATIONS

Energy One - a global supplier of energy trading software products and operational services to wholesale energy, environmental and carbon trading markets - offers innovative and flexible solutions to support battery, demand response, renewable and other generation assets.

Listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX:EOL), Energy One has a successful track record of providing sophisticated, practical software and services to European and Asia-Pacific companies operating in the fast-paced, 24/7 wholesale energy marketplace.

A key focus of its innovation is working with customers to optimise the return on battery assets with innovative and adaptable optimisation and automation software, to help power the transition to renewable energy.

Energy One’s fully automated scheduling and nomination solution, underpinned by its technology platforms, allows customers to operate any combination of generation assets. The solution also enables end users to rapidly develop, test and deploy trading strategies on an asset-by-asset basis, allowing users to flexibly operate portfolios in dynamic markets with distributed assets. The solution from Energy One is scalable and can support multiple assets within a broader portfolio, across multiple markets.

Energy One Group CEO, Shaun Ankers, comments: “Batteries are an essential part of the energy transition. These highly flexible assets can provide value in multiple ways including energy balancing, frequency control and network support.  Optimising the return on these assets requires innovative and flexible optimisation and automation software. This is where Energy One can help.

“We are excited to be able to assist customers with the renewable energy transition. Our global capability in both technology and services means we can support renewables developers with cutting edge solutions.”

Battery solutions for European and Asia-Pacific markets

Renewable generation is by nature intermittent but operates in a grid environment that requires continuous balance of supply and demand. The increasing penetration of renewable generation is assisted by the addition of firming capacity, often via storage, in the form of hydroelectric power or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The European market for grid-scale batteries/storage is growing rapidly and is set to continue, growing 20x by 2031 (source: Wood Mackenzie). This creates opportunities for developers and asset owners alike, as well as challenges in terms of optimising the commercial/technical objectives for each asset or portfolio.

Batteries can provide value in many ways including energy arbitrage, frequency services and transmission support services. New and developing technologies such as automation, optimisation, machine learning and other forecasting techniques can be applied to support development of optimal schedules and automatic nomination to leverage this potential.

Energy One offers innovative and flexible solutions to support battery, demand response, renewable and other generation assets that can be used by European asset owners, especially those wishing to optimise the outcomes for their assets based on the characteristics and location of those assets and the customers’ objectives, be it via merchant supply, demand-side balancing or portfolio purposes, or grid control.

Optimising return on storage assets

Optimal dispatch of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and other storage assets (such as pumped hydro) relies on optimising economic return, subject to asset and market constraints on a 24 x 7 basis.

Energy One’s battery and storage solution has comprehensive support for all storage optimisation and dispatch needs for asset owners, including:

  • Price forecasting for optimisation across all potential revenue streams
  • Comprehensive modelling of all BESS constraints, including cycling budgets
  • Portfolio and business objective and strategy considerations
  • Automated scheduling and nomination

Operational flexibility

BESS and other storage assets (such as pumped hydro) have unique operational and optimisation needs. Energy One’s storage solution runs within the context of its automation engine, providing complete flexibility in the inputs to optimisation and schedule solution including:

  • Market inputs
  • Plant inputs obtained from SCADA or Battery Management System
  • Other relevant inputs, such as constraints from network service providers, co-located generation assets or loads and time of day network charges
  • Price inputs

The combination of a configurable process engine and configurable dashboard allows customers to design the automation solution as appropriate to their needs, including the level of interaction with trading operations staff.

Innovative global 24/7 services to support renewable energy generation

To meet the needs of renewable energy generation and help customers transition to the new economy, Energy One has also established global 24/7 energy solutions. This means the company provides software with a service to meet the rapidly growing market need.

Its specialised software for the management of renewable generation and batteries can be combined with its premium 24/7 service offering, enabling the seamless and successful entry of renewable energy into international electricity markets.

Thanks to this innovation, Energy One is now the only software vendor providing seamless global 24/7 operational energy services and control rooms.

Shaun Ankers continues: “A global 24/7 operations desk with a follow-the-sun approach means we have full coverage of daytime staff operating night shifts for energy portfolios across the globe.

“Having an established team of sophisticated, technically adept personnel and a global presence makes Energy One a reliable partner for global entities looking to outsource operational activities for both power and gas and places us at the forefront of the transition to the renewable energy future.”
