ruhrvalley: Solutions for the expansion of renewable energies

At E-world, ruhrvalley is part of a joint stand sponsored by the state of North-Rhine Westphalia (no. 370, hall 3) to represent regional innovative actors of the energy business. Energy is one of the core competence areas within the ruhrvalley DeepTech innovation network. At E-world, ruhrvalley presents the following tech-projects: “Use of mine tunnels to store renewable energy“ and “Intelligent monitoring of borehole pumps“.

Intelligent and multivalent heat grid for solar and geothermal energy
In the project “Smart Solar Geothermal Energy Grid Ruhr” (GeoSmaGriR), the ruhrvalley partners developed a prototype of an intelligent and multivalent heat network for solar and geothermal energy that stores seasonal excess heat underground in former coal mines. The buildings connected to district heating and solar thermal energy are the consumers and producers within this system. To link these decentralized producers and consumers, GeoSmaGriR consists of a distributed system architecture. The interaction of the individual system components is controlled by a central software platform to ensure efficient data processing. A demonstrator illustrates the functions and elements of such a heat network.

IT platform for intelligent monitoring of borehole pumps
On the basis of GeoSmaGriR project another platform, COMPRESS, was born. COMPRESS stands for “Condition Monitoring for Predictive Maintenance Adapted to Geothermal Electric Submersible Pumps”. This new IT platform enables intelligent monitoring of borehole pumps used to extract geothermal energy. Due to the environmental operating conditions of these pumps, their efficiency and durability are often severely reduced and malfunctions occur frequently. The intelligent pump monitoring is linked to a condition monitoring system that provides statistical predictions about the condition of a pump, helping to extend the pumps' service life.

ruhrvalley - The DeepTech Innovation Network
Partners of the network are working on innovative science-based solutions for a post-fossil and networked society. Research-intensive technologies are at the core of the partnership, substantial innovation the declared goal. As a regional network ruhrvalley creates value for its partners by strengthening their capacity for innovation. Bochum University of Applied Sciences, Fachhochschule Dortmund - University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and Westphalian University of Applied Sciences are the scientific backbone of ruhrvalley and implement various research and development projects with partners from industry and society. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports the partnership in the funding programme “FH-Impuls: Strong Universities of Applied Sciences – Impulses for the Region” (translated).
