Research for a CO2-neutral industry in NRW

SPIN creates alliances between industry and research
The “Spitzencluster für industrielle Innovationen e. V. (Leading-Edge Cluster for Industrial Innovations e. V., SPIN) creates alliances of industry, research and start-ups as well as public institutions in NRW. The aim is to implement sustainable research pro-jects for climate protection that are particularly groundbreaking and promising for broad application in practice. In this way, they are also intended to promote an internationally competitive economy and create added value and jobs for local people. SPIN currently comprises 31 members and partners (as of mid-May), which the Leading-Edge Cluster supports in all processes from the initial project idea to the realization of an application-related research project – in particular in matching the right partners as well as in advising on funding, submitting applications and supporting the settlement of funding, setting up projects and finding solutions to all questions relating to the re-search projects. Six research projects are currently being funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and another four are in the process of being approved for funding.

Regular project presentations to SPIN selection committee
Since the association was founded in January 2020, SPIN members and their project partners have gone through an evaluation process of the successful Leading-Edge Clus-ter three times. SPIN subsequently recommends the projects selected by the SPIN selection committee to the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy (MWIDE) for funding. The selected projects have a good chance of receiving public funding. In addition to representatives of the SPIN board and the SPIN office, the panel also consists of experts from leading research institutes in Germany. The evaluation process is accompanied by other well-known people from the research community, who monitor the decision-making process and advise the panel.

Energy transition for industries in NRW
SPIN projects contribute to the transformation of energy-intensive industries in NRW with regard to the energy and raw materials transition and promote technology trans-fer between research and industry. The first six projects deal with the further develop-ment of technologies such as power-to-X, large-scale battery storage for renewable energy and the measurement of energy flows in distribution grids and have names such as Fit4eChange, DSC, WIN4KMU, DIANE or P2X.

Promotion of the SPIN office
The establishment of the SPIN office has been funded by the state of NRW for the next three years since the beginning of 2022 and is also one of 73 projects of the Ruhr Con-ference. SPIN currently employs five people and is located in Essen in the co-working space of the ruhrHUB.
