The Future of Grids: Perspectives for Operators of Gas and Electricity Grids
The decarbonisation of mobility and heat supply will pose major challenges for utility grid operators. Electricity distribution network operators are taking on more tasks with Redispatch 2.0 and the management of interruptible consumption facilities and will compete for funding for the increasing investment needs with other energy industry fields of activity.
Gas distribution system operators have to keep an eye on the long-term investment perspectives due to the replacement of fossil natural gas with green gases as gas consumption continues to rise. The prospects with green hydrogen are basically there, but it remains to be seen if and when hydrogen will be available in what quantities for household customers and heat supply.
With equity interest rates falling and regulatory requirements rising at the same time, the pressure to manage assets sustainably and reduce costs will increase.
